I loved the first book in this series ("His Horizon") and was deeply curious about what might happen after skipper Tom dropped Jude off in his home village and replaced him immediately with a kid named Nick. Then those two disappeared from sight but before I knew it, Tom showed up on the cover of this second book in what is turning out to be a great series.Woof!In his early 40s and tormented by all sorts of things in his past which have led him to near financial disaster, Tom has been pulled from the helm of his beloved luxury party boat to captain a new sailboat prototype. Who should show up and claim (surreptitiously) the assignment of chief deckhand but the aforementioned 25-year-old Nick. If you think Tom has issues, wait until he finally lets Nick lay out his own inner terrors.Did you know Tom had basically fired Nick after their aforementioned journey? Well now that you do, dear reader, hang on for one of the most delicious and heartwarming shipboard romances you are likely to encounter on any sea or in any port.As mentioned, both of them have issues and ironically if you have some intuition you may recognize what Nick's are even though Tim refuses to force him to reveal them until the second half of the book. Tom and Nick’s story starts off rough. Tom believes Nick to be a lazy spoiled liar who would rather flirt his way out of a job than do it properly. Nick just wants someone to believe in him and prove that he can do the things he needs to with a little help and instruction. I was actually pretty mad at Tom in the beginning because he was rather rude and downright mean to Nick. Tom is offered a contract to sea trial a new yacht with a bonus that he couldn’t afford to turn down. Nick is the deck hand selected to help put the yacht through its paces. With a lot of patience and help from Tom, Nick begins to flourish and grow as a person. He quickly becomes a fantastic sailor and Tom falls a little more for him each day, which is perfectly fine by Nick.There’s something in Nick’s past that he wants to tell Tom but Tom refuses to let him. Tom has a lot of baggage of his own and together they have to sort it out.We get to revisit Jude and Rob and meet some new secondary characters that are sure to steal your heart.His Compass is a journey that takes you through highs and lows, love and guilt, the pressure to perform as expected and teaches lessons in not judging a book by its cover but finding out the whole story and loving it from the inside out. Once again, Con’s characters are real and raw, they make mistakes but work hard to make up for them and they love hard. Tom and Nick together makes so much sense once you really get down to their cores of what makes them tick. I just wanted to cuddle Nick and tell him it would be okay and that I was so proud of him. Sometimes I wanted to slap Tom for making Nick feel bad, but there’s much more to it.I can’t express in words just how much I adored this story and can’t wait for Mitch and Keira’s story!! Hopefully we’ll more of Justin along with it!!
