Ebook About Kyle: Basketball is my life. I'm confident that with hard work, my position will carry me from rural Indiana to the NBA. I have big dreams, but they don’t include coming out of the closet. Admitting to the world that I’m attracted to guys is something I’m afraid to do. Basketball and my dad are everything to me, and I can’t risk losing either one. And now I’m secretly lusting after my new roommate, who is nothing like me. He’s out, proud, and definitely not a virgin. Micah: My large family can't spare the money for my education, but that won't stop me from studying medicine—I’ll work my butt off to get where I need to go. I can deal with anything, now that I’m out of the house I shared with my ex, even if it means living with a straight jock. But our tiny dorm room is becoming smaller, and my feelings are becoming larger. What will Kyle do if I accidentally cross a line? When a sports scandal rocks Kyle’s world, he and Micah fight for his reputation, and life's plans are turned upside down by love.Rim Shot is a republished New Adult romance that contains tropes of forced proximity, friends-to-lovers, and hurt-comfort. It is a standalone work with a guaranteed HEA.Book Rim Shot Review :
Ahhh…I wanted these guys to be successful in their relationship. They were both sweet, caring and passionate about their life choices. Both had had less than perfect back-stories so they were due an HEA, which they get in RIM SHOT. There is some humor but lots of angst.Kyle Sweeney is a big guy, earnest fellow and celebrated basketball player on his college team, hoping for a ticket to the NBA. Since he’s a star player, all indications are that he’ll be going that direction. But, he’s in the closet. Way, way back in the closet. He’s afraid coming out will ruin his chances. As his sophomore year begins, he finds out that his roommate and good buddy will not be returning. He’s very disappointed because Keller was also an integral part of their team and good dorm roomie. Enter Micah Hutchinson: upperclassman, medical student and out-and-proud gay man. Micah thinks Kyle is attractive but so very straight. Too bad. Well, won’t these guys be surprised?! Just when I thought their only obstacle was going to be Kyle’s coming out, BAM another even more serious situation arises. Can they overcome this too? This was a well-written, well-edited coming out story of two very deserving young men. I just wish there had been an epilogue giving us some insight into their future. Did Kyle make it to the NBA? Does Micah become the doctor he’s worked so hard to become? Therefore, I give it only 4.25 stars which an epilogue would remedy. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews. If you like M/M romance between young men who are sweet and passionate, read this story. Mixed feelings on this one. I'd give five stars with a big caveat for the story itself, but the sex scenes would get a two. It was worth the read though. I would just love to see the author find more immediacy with the general storytelling (more in the moment dialog and less describing dialog in retrospect) and a writing style for the sex scenes that is more balanced with the rest of the book.I love a great sex scene - I'm not prudish at all, but the challenge was that the writing style shifted when the sex started. The non-sex scenes were more macro in nature - there would be some dialog but often a character would describe an evening in general - the tenor of conversations and the feelings they engendered. Occasionally they'd get in the moment with dialog for short bits but mostly the non-sex portions would be told in a more general "this is what happened" overview. But 40% into the story when the sex scenes start, the storytelling became granular - a second by second account of each tug, lick and nibble - which did two things. Instead of being erotic it became almost medical - and felt like too much information about characters that we were becoming intimate with. The obsessively close look at the sexual bits when everything else in the story was told more generally was a strange contrast that made the descriptions feel too much. The other thing the sex scenes did with me was make me realize that the author was a woman. Until then I'd assumed that the writer was a man. But the sex - despite the parts - was woman sex. The pacing and the emotions did not feel like men. I understand how pacing a story's sex acts over the course of a semester made sense structurally - but men do not have that sort of restraint typically. We aren't worried about pregnancy and we don't have the same hesitance that women often do. We are not going to wait two weeks to move from kissing to going down, or a semester to jump into the full enchilada. Sure, some may wait, and these characters may fall into that camp, but it just didn't feel like actual men when it came to the descriptions. It was like women with male parts. So- that threw me a bit out of the storytelling which was going well to that point. After that, the general story became one of a woman attempting with mixed success of trying to get into a man's POV. But, once I put aside those overall issues, I enjoyed the story for what it is. There was a nice progression within the characters. I more often than not skimmed the sex scenes for plot information lest I miss something (I love a good sex scene - but ten pages of minute description gets boring despite the subject) and there is plenty of solid story without the blow by blow bits - so the book works well (even better) without reading every nano-second of the sex.
