Susanna made this a good story. She was loving, and strong and smart, and giving and forgiving; and did I say strong? I liked Bram for the most part, but when at 50% he took her virginity- outside, in the town square, at night, with a party going on close by- that was a little too much even for me after having read erotica and romances for over twenty years. He slowly lost his alpha card after that. And especially for an historical to boot! All their sexual escapades happen outside. It just doesn't fit with the genre to me. We're not talking low society- maids and farm workers- but genteel people, here with titles and gowns. If you can get by that, it's an okay story. Kept me reading anyway. Hopefully, the next one will be better, as I've already bought it. This is the first and my personal favorite of this series. The beginning with the sheep bombing has to be one of the best openings to a story ever. (Don’t worry; no fictional animals were harmed in the making of this book!). This is such a good story with many clever phrasings; my favorite of which is the following:“She couldn’t help but smile at his sweet promises of violence, offered up like a posy of carnivorous blooms.”So very good. I highly recommend reading this as well as the short novellas in this series.Addendum: A number of other reviewers stated that this book was “rapey.” This was not my impression. The hero paused for the heroine to consent a second time before continuing. His lines may have been stereotypical male lines, but they were nothing that any other man without a withered twig and dried out currants would have said. (If that offends you, don’t read this book). If you are looking for Jane Austen-esqe writing this book isn’t for you. It is humorous and entertaining without taking itself too seriously.
