Ebook About Andy Gage was born in 1965 and murdered not long after by his stepfather. . . . It was no ordinary murder. Though the torture and abuse that killed him were real, Andy Gage's death wasn't. Only his soul actually died, and when it died, it broke in pieces. Then the pieces became souls in their own right, coinheritors of Andy Gage's life. . . . While Andy deals with the outside world, more than a hundred other souls share an imaginary house inside Andy's head, struggling to maintain an orderly coexistence: Aaron, the father figure; Adam, the mischievous teenager; Jake, the frightened little boy; Aunt Sam, the artist; Seferis, the defender; and Gideon, who wants to get rid of Andy and the others and run things on his own. Andy's new coworker, Penny Driver, is also a multiple personality, a fact that Penny is only partially aware of. When several of Penny's other souls ask Andy for help, Andy reluctantly agrees, setting in motion a chain of events that threatens to destroy the stability of the house. Now Andy and Penny must work together to uncover a terrible secret that Andy has been keeping . . . from himself.Book Set This House in Order: A Romance of Souls Review :
I just finished this book about 4 minutes ago - just long enough to have stopped (just barely) dabbing at my eyes with Kleenex. Lots of books end the way a roller coaster ride ends - exhilarating and exciting, but plenty long enough and happily satisfying as you close the book. This book ended for me more the way summer camp ended - with the devastating, heart wrenching sensation that you really may not be able to live without it. At the risk of sounding trite, some books do almost take on a persona in the reading. They become friends more than stories. That was definitely the case with this book. Have room for another great friend in your life? Give Set This House In Order a shot. Someone I love very much has DID due to trauma that happened outside the home when they were young. It breaks my heart that so much DID is caused from trauma and abuse within the home. I have seen so many Hollywood movies and seen so many portrayals of DID in fiction, and they have all been, frankly, unrealistic and terrible. There's almost always a serial killer alter, or the people with DID are seen as dangerous when, in fact, those with DID are more likely to be abused than to ever abuse. The system I know are pacifists. And there are so many other misconceptions--that alters can be seen like hallucinations or that alters can be killed (both of which are not true). This past summer, I was searching for a fiction book, any fiction book, that might portray DID in a more authentic way, and I came across this book. It showed so many realistic ups and downs faced by people with DID. Every DID system handles things differently, and that was shown very well in the book. (The DID system I know, for example, does not have one single persona who is "in charge." They are all in charge--they make decisions together, divide up their time so they all get chances to front, and share memories. They no longer have any memory gaps or blackouts.) So I applaud the fact that the author portrayed two different DID systems and their differences and did it so well. I applaud that the author did not fall into the Hollywood tropes I've seen before. This was real and authentic and raw, and especially given that it was written so long ago, I am impressed with how well the author wrote about treatments that are used today.
